Recognition strengthens the container terminal’s commitments to sustainability and transparency in the port sector.
Santos, September 17, 2024 – Brasil Terminal Portuário (BTP) has received, for the third consecutive year, the Gold Seal from the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program. The recognition, granted by Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV), has both national and international credibility. The Brazilian GHG Protocol Program evaluates companies’ annual Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions inventories, awarding ratings at the bronze, silver, and gold levels.
BTP has been registered in the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program since 2021, with three voluntarily published inventories verified by independent audits.
In addition to monitoring and calculating direct and indirect GHG emissions, the company seeks to adopt initiatives to definitively cease the emission of pollutants in its port operations. BTP holds the I-REC certification, confirming that 100% of the energy used at the terminal is sourced from renewable energy. The company promotes a continuous improvement culture among employees to support decarbonization.
BTP’s Environmental Coordinator, Gilberto Peres Junior, explains that the company encourages everyone’s participation in building a more sustainable port sector. “Last year, a single project implemented at the terminal prevented the emission of over 576 tons of carbon dioxide. This third Gold Seal award is an achievement for the entire BTP team” he stated.
According to BTP’s Sustainability Manager, Elisabete Ramos Orifice, this recognition confirms a longstanding commitment. “Decarbonization has become increasingly relevant across the port sector, yet BTP has always been committed to sustainability and transparency. ESG is part of our strategic plan for the coming years” she added.
BTP will invest around R$2 billion in the coming years in an investment package built on ESG best practices as a key pillar. The company will acquire four ship-to-shore cranes (STS), 57 rubber-tired gantry cranes (RTG), and 46 terminal tractors—more sustainable equipment technologies. Civil works will also be undertaken to align building facilities with these best practices.
Renato Ferreira da Silva, Environmental and Occupational Safety Manager, added that the company aims to become a carbon-neutral terminal by 2030. “We have an ambitious energy transition plan that will bring in more technology without greenhouse gas emissions, promoting effective sustainable development at the Port of Santos” he revealed.
About GHG Inventories – A GHG inventory is a document that calculates and records the estimated emissions of greenhouse gases, directly or indirectly, by a company. Publishing the inventory is voluntary, through the Public Emissions Registry (PER). To qualify for the Gold Seal, the inventory must be audited by an independent, specialized firm.
About the Program – Created in 2008 and coordinated by FGV’s Sustainability Studies Center, the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program (PBGHG) adapts the GHG Protocol method to the Brazilian context. The results from the latest evaluation cycle were presented to the market in August at the Annual Event of the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program in São Paulo.
In addition to monitoring and calculating direct and indirect GHG emissions, the company seeks to adopt initiatives to definitively cease the emission of pollutants in its port operations.
